Birlapur

We were recovering from the shock of the bygone Half Yearly examination when we first came to know of the trip to Birlapur. The fact that the it was a long trip and was free to all of us excited us immensely. Almost immediately all of the boys of our class ,with the possible exception of one or two decided that we had to go to this relatively "unknown"place. However the declaration of the results brought about a change in mood to most of the "previously interested" students and at a particular point of time only Sombuddha,Sisir and I were the only boys interested for the trip. However as Freddie Mercury had said "It aint no bed of roses" the Statistics copies were shown most of us had to bear the brunt with mediocre marks, a result of neglecting our studies. This took a toll on poor Sombuddha ,an external student from Narendrapur R.K Mission who before the Half Yearly had been the hot favourite to occupy the coveted numero uno rank of our section.A nice boy as he is Sombuddha has three excellent qualities 1)He loves Chicken do-piaza 2)He is not a Roque Junior fan 3)He never lies about his marks to his family , an act that has now become inherent with students nowadays, something which I find to be disgusting. Thus it was no strange thing that his mother gave him quite a piece of her mind after hearing his marks and he was ordered not to attend any trip if it coincided with his tuitions. As luck would have it,he had his Stats tuitions on Saturday(the day the trip was to take place) and after many requests to his parents and tutor , it became evident that there was only one way by which he could attend his tuition as well as go for the trip by convincing B.C to take the tuitions on Wednesday instead of the usual Saturaday. But B.C is a B.C and said no and hence Sombuddha's name was unwillingly cut off from the list of people interested to go to Birlapur. That left me and Sisir and both of us were unwilling to go if no other boy from our class came with us .Budo and Sayan were the obvious choice but after the English scripts were shown it was highly doubtful that either of them would actually make the trip.It was then that I stepped up and gave an excellent pep-talk which aggravated Sharbadwip greatly for he ,by his high standards had secured modest marks. The mood became heated but my speech worked none-the- less coz at the end of the day not only Budo and Sayan but Suman,Sharbadwip and Ankur were all willing to go for the trip.I had made arrangements for Suvobrata and Sayak to go to Birlapur too by taking them to the co-ordinator but they backed out at the last moment understandably because they were the only ones from J.

D-day arrived and I woke up at 6 in the morning, had a bath and set of for school.I had ,for 10 years ,been a student of the morning session and hence waking up early was no big deal for me.Moreover if truth be told, I feel that going to school inthe morning is much better and more pleasant than from 11 am. as you can breathe in the fresh morning air and most importantly ,cross the roads with more ease. After reaching school , I found that only two boys from the Commerce faculty had arrived and hence felt that it would be better if I waited outside. As time passed everybody seemed to arrive, even the Commerce students ,but no boy from our section had turned up .This complicated matters for I had initially planned that even if one boy from our class reported to school I would go for the trip as I felt that it was bloody embarrassing to return home after setting off for a so-called tour. But things looked up once Budo arrived and in a matter of fifteen minutes or so the whole group with the exception of Sayan turned up.We called him up and his mother told us that he had set off for school.Sayan arrived at quarter to eight ,fifteen minutes late and had it not been because of our constant requests , he might just have missed the trip.

We set off for Birlapur with 40 odd students and 6 teachers .The journey was enjoyable for we sang and chorused the latest hits like Aadat and Kajra Re.Our chorus sounded so good that accolades were showered upon us but everything has its hazards and soon we were croaking courtesy of shouting at the top of our voices.

We arrived at Birlapur at 10'o clock and the place was fabulous. We were lodged at this resort with excellent lawns and well-maintained badminton courts and as soon as we had arrived , we were ordered to go to the dining-hall were breakfast was to be served.

After having breakfast we played T.T and even Vice-Principal Madam joined in .It was here that both me and Suman played "The Game of the Century" which resulted in a tie ,as we had to leave for sight-seeing.

We were taken to the famous ghats of the Ganges and one of the local authorities took great care in explaining the different structural peculiarities of the river in its lower course. It was then time to leave for the Jute mills , an experience which I regard to be one of the finest of my life.It was the first time that I had been in an actual factory and it was fascinating to be among thousands of machines and labourers who were working as if unaware of our existence. We were then shown by the local authorities the different ways by which jute was processed and made ready for sale and export. It was an awe-inspiring experience and something which I will treasure forever.

Lunch was served at 1 p.m and most of us dug in pretty deep and ate tremendous volumes of the delicious food which was served. We were advised to relax after having our lunch and we played some practise matches on the TT board. At around 2-30 pm we were taken to the local power centre and we were amazed to see a live furnace and a water-purifying agent. We were served soft drinks and coffee on our return and at 4 pm it was time to bid adieu.

It was an enchanting experience, one which I will always treasure ,one which brought me closer to my state West Bengal, brought me closer to life.

Three blogs in a day , I deserve some rest .Will write again after a week or so.
